Art Syllabus

Subjects: Drawing I, Watercolor, Acrylic

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the basic elements of art; line, form and shape, texture, value, and color, through a variety of mediums and projects. Students will also be introduced to some principles of design: patterning, harmony, balance, perspective, and function. As students begin to gain confidence in their ability to create, academic skills will also be developed within the context of every project. These include an art vocabulary and familiarity with at least three artists of the 20th century. Students should expect several projects during the course.

Expectations: I will expect students to arrive in class on time - though I shall be lenient if you are late every once and while. I understand some circumstances that may occur that will make you a bit tardy from time to time, but do your best to arrive on a timely basis - but I will expect an explanation, and a truthful one at that. I shall know if you are lying to me.

I will do well to respect all of my students as individuals and young adults - which means I shall expect an amount of maturity from all of you. Crude humor and misbehaviors are not things I will accept. Mind yourselves.

The materials you should bring to class every day is simple: a pen or pencil and a notebook. Other materials, such as rulers, a set of pencils, and other supplies shall be available. However, if you feel more comfortable with your own supplies, do as you see fit.

There shall be approximately six projects for you all to complete by the end of the semester. Specifications will be made upon the first day of class.

Additional Notes: I am available during school hours, and onto approximately 2-3 hours after class.

If you need to make up an assignment, speak with me before or after class and we shall set something for you. You must come to me, I shall not come to you. Be responsible for yourself.

There are times when you will leave a mess in the art room. This is fine; I do not expect any less from paints and pastels. However, you must clean after yourself. I will know if you have not.

Cheating: This is absolutely unacceptable. I will know when you do it. If you do it, you will fail your test. If it is during your final exam, you will fail. If you deliberately copy another person's assignment with homework, you will not receive credit. In other words, if you repeat this habit, you will ultimately fail. Do not cheat in my class or any other class.

Grading:

Class Participation - 20%
Homework - 10%
Projects - 40%
Tests - 10%
Final Exam - 20%

If there are any questions, you may ask them. I will do what I can to answer.
